La Joya Prison Search Finds Weapons, Phones and Suspected Drugs
PANAMA CITY, August 8, 2026 – Police reported the seizure of three firearms, 253 cellphones and suspected illegal substances during a search at La Joya prison.
Metro Libre reported that the operation covered pavilions 1, 2 and Guantanamo 1, where officers also found six bundles with suspected illicit substances, 38 small bags of presumed dry herb and 11 small bags of presumed white powder.
According to police, the prohibited items were found in clandestine hiding places inside the prison facilities.
The discovery highlights ongoing security challenges inside correctional facilities, where weapons, phones and drugs can support criminal coordination and violence behind bars.
Cellphones are especially sensitive in prison searches because they can allow inmates to communicate outside official controls.
Police said operations will continue in coordination with the General Directorate of the Penitentiary System under the Ministry of Government to strengthen security and prevent criminal activity in prisons.
