Hospital Sergio Núñez de Ocú Set for $10 Million Recovery and Equipment Investment
OCÚ, HERRERA, November 1, 2026 — The Hospital Sergio Núñez de Ocú is set to receive a $10 million investment to recover structures affected by the October 9 earthquake and add medical equipment, according to Health Minister Fernando Boyd Galindo.
What the investment is intended to cover
During a visit to Herrera, the minister said the planned work includes recovery of damaged areas and the addition of equipment intended to improve conditions of care. The announcement identifies an investment amount and purpose, but it does not by itself establish a construction start date or a completion timetable.
For patients and families, those details matter. A recovery project should be followed by clear information on which services are affected, how care will continue during works and when each phase is expected to be completed.
Support for Herrera health services
The report said the actions are connected to a donation of supplies intended to reinforce health services in Herrera, resulting from joint efforts involving the presidency of the National Assembly and Panama’s embassy in Costa Rica.
Regional health infrastructure context
The minister also said land transfer had been completed for a temporary rural hospital in Tonosí, a step that can allow the Ministry of Health to advance toward an order to proceed while a permanent hospital project is developed. These are separate projects, but both point to the importance of maintaining access to care while damaged or inadequate facilities are addressed.
