Electric Bus Fleet Begins Service in Panama Casco Antiguo
PANAMA CITY, August 8, 2026 – Panama has put five electric buses into service on the Casco Antiguo route, marking a visible step toward cleaner public transport in one of the capital most visited historic areas.
Telemetro reported that Mi Bus general manager Carlos Sanchez Fabrega said Panama expects to receive 60 additional electric units next year through an agreement with the Inter-American Development Bank.
The new route matters because Casco Antiguo combines residents, tourists, businesses and heritage sites in a compact area where traffic, emissions and pedestrian access are frequent concerns.
Electric buses can reduce local emissions and noise when compared with conventional diesel units, but their success depends on reliability, charging infrastructure, maintenance capacity and service frequency.
The first five units also provide a practical test case for scaling electric mobility across other routes. A larger 60-unit delivery would move the effort from pilot stage toward more substantial fleet transformation.
