SINAPROC Declares Green Alert for Bocas del Toro, Ngabe-Bugle and Naso Tjer Di
BOCAS DEL TORO, August 17, 2026 – The National Civil Protection System, SINAPROC, declared a Green Alert for rain, storms and wind gusts from 6:00 p.m. on Sunday, August 16, for sectors of Bocas del Toro province, the Ngabe-Bugle comarca and the Naso Tjer Di region, Metro Libre reported.
The measure was adopted on the basis of technical and scientific analysis by the Institute of Meteorology and Hydrology of Panama, which maintains a scenario favourable to rain of varying intensity, some accompanied by storms.
Those conditions are capable of generating rapid increases in the flow of rivers and streams, flooding in vulnerable sectors and landslides.
The Green Alert covers the districts of Changuinola, Almirante and Chiriqui Grande in Bocas del Toro, Jirondai and Kankintu in the Ngabe-Bugle comarca, and the entire territory of the Naso Tjer Di region.
SINAPROC recommends that residents avoid water activities while the alert is in force, stay away from rivers, streams, lakes and beaches, and not attempt to cross watercourses that are running high.
The agency also urged people to activate and review family, workplace and school emergency plans, and to stay informed through official channels. Emergencies should be reported to 911 or 520-4426.
The declaration remains in force until weather conditions are considered stable by qualified IMHPA personnel.

Why it matters
The alert covers areas already dealing with flooding, and it sets the official guidance residents are expected to follow.
What happens next
The alert stays active until IMHPA judges conditions to have stabilised.
