But after several days of permanent session, in the early hours of Friday, May 3, 2024, with 8 votes in favor and a saving vote, the full Court decided that Mulino’s presidential candidacy is not unconstitutional.
After that decision, the expected reactions from Mulino’s opponents arose, some disagreeing that at this time they should not disqualify a candidate, while others describe it as an early rise.
Ricardo Lombana, presidential candidate for the Movimiento Otro Camino party (Moca), stated that he did not agree with disqualifying a candidate at this time, having already started voting, creating uncertainty even around the ruling itself.
However, he said he is glad that this was the result of the ruling and that Mulino is running, as he is ready to defeat him.
For the candidate Rómulo Roux, of the Democratic Change and Panameñista parties, with this ruling the pact for impunity of RM-Gaby-Mulino-Benicio is confirmed, “who want to stay in power to continue looting Panama without anything happening to them. “We cannot make a mistake again with the division of the vote like in 2019, which gave victory to Cortizo, Gaby-PRD.”
He assured that he is the only one who can defeat them with the structure and strength of the CD-Panameñista alliance.
Meanwhile, Martín Torrijos, candidate for the Popular Party, described the decision of the Supreme Court of Justice and a Netflix episode as an early morning.
In its opinion, the Court could have ruled many months and weeks ago. “I don’t know if in law or if it is the seal of other agreements that are taking place at the level of protection and impunity,” said Torrijos.
While Maribel Gordón, presidential candidate for free nomination, pointed out that the ruling allows an advertising agenda that should not have been because yesterday they closed the campaign period, so today one of the candidates is the product of a late ruling scenario that generates uncertainty “ and furthermore, for many it is not necessarily a ruling in the legal process.”
