Housing Reconstruction Begins as Weather Watch Continues in Veraguas and Los Santos
PANAMA, October 20, 2026 — Earthquake recovery in Panama is now intersecting with a separate risk: weather. Authorities are maintaining a green alert in Veraguas and Los Santos as they continue housing assistance, school inspections and monitoring of rivers, streams and slopes.
According to the reported government update, reconstruction has begun for homes with total or partial damage. The work includes debris removal and preparation of land considered suitable for construction. Any new construction must comply with Panama’s Structural Regulation, the report said.
Rebuilding requires more than replacing walls
For a damaged home, a safe recovery decision involves the building and the land beneath it. A site can face flooding, slope instability or a loss of soil-bearing capacity. The update said technical evaluations will help determine whether a family needs relocation when land presents those risks.
This is why a green alert should not be ignored simply because the immediate earthquake has passed. Rain can make already weakened areas more hazardous, and conditions around rivers, creeks and slopes can change quickly. Residents in affected areas should follow official alerts and report hazards through the appropriate authorities.
Operations and inspections continue
The update described SENAN operations of about 329 flight hours, more than 5,000 kilometers covered, more than 2,500 miles navigated and attention to more than 45 communities through an air bridge. It also said school inspections were continuing in Herrera, Los Santos and Coclé.
These figures describe the scale of the response, but they do not replace an individual assessment of a particular home or school. Families should not re-enter or alter a visibly damaged structure until responsible professionals or authorities say it is safe.
Authorities may raise the alert level to yellow if weather conditions worsen, according to the report. Panama Now Online will continue to distinguish confirmed government actions from preliminary field conditions as more updates become available.
