The Municipal Affairs Commission of the National Assembly approved in the first debate Bill 796, which creates the special district of Batimentos, segregated from the district of Bocas del Toro and the districts of Bahía Honda, Quebrada de Sal, and Solarte, segregated from the district of Bastiments.
According to this legislative initiative presented by the PRD deputy, Benicio Robinson, it seeks to return the Bastimentos township to the category of district, so that, in accordance with its principles of development sustainability, it responds to the need expressed by the communities that comprise them. .
The document alleges that Bastimentos is located in a coastal area, has considerable potential for tourism development with a population of different ethnic groups, in addition to a growing population of European origin that form a human component of attraction and functionality, culture and history.
Ashburn Dixon, representative of the district of Bocas del Toro, told the Star of Panama a few days ago that he defends the new district due to the palpable poverty of the area.
He argued that they are demanding social justice, since 51 years ago they took away the district seat and gave it to Changuinola.
“We are only asking the government to do justice… We are not creating a district for the PRD, because the benefit remains for the people. We cannot politicize the issue,” argued Dixón.
