Panama Plans a Phased Return to Classrooms Across 12 Education Regions

PANAMA, October 20, 2026 — Panama is preparing for a phased return to in-person classes beginning Wednesday, October 21, but the reopening is conditional: schools must be operational before they receive students.

The announced plan covers 770 education centers across 12 education regions: Panamá Centro, Panamá Este, Panamá Norte, Panamá Oeste, San Miguelito, Colón, Darién, Chiriquí, Bocas del Toro, Comarca Emberá-Wounaan, Comarca Guna Yala and Comarca Ngäbe-Buglé.

A phased return, not an automatic reopening

The most important detail for parents and students is that the announcement does not mean every school in those regions will open at the same time. The return is progressive and depends on a center’s operational condition. Families should therefore confirm instructions through their own school and the Ministry of Education’s official communications before traveling.

That approach recognizes that an education system can resume only when physical spaces, access and school operations are ready. It also helps avoid treating a nationwide announcement as a one-size-fits-all answer for campuses with different circumstances.

What families can do now

Parents and guardians should check the school’s official notice for the opening date, schedule, any entry arrangements and whether a particular campus has additional guidance. Students should return with the same attention to safety and calm that recovery requires: report visible hazards to school staff rather than attempting to inspect or handle them personally.

Schools are more than classrooms. They are also places where children, families and staff regain routines after disruption. The quality of the return will depend on transparent local communication and the ability of education authorities to respond quickly when a campus needs more time or technical attention.

Panama Now Online will update this item if education authorities publish a change to the reopening schedule or new operational information.
