Isla Cañas Residents Await Technical Decision on Returning Home After Ground Changes

ISLA CAÑAS, LOS SANTOS, October 27, 2026 — At least 600 residents of Isla Cañas remain uncertain about when they can return home after the October 9 earthquake caused ground-level changes and subsidence concerns, according to a report published today.

Isla Cañas is in the Tonosí district. The report cited Héctor Pineda of the University of Panama’s Seismic Network and said specialists must determine whether conditions allow residents to return safely.

Why a return decision takes time

A return home after ground movement is not simply a question of whether a building is still standing. Authorities and technical teams need to understand soil conditions, flooding exposure and whether infrastructure such as pipes can safely function. The report said officials were also waiting for high tides forecast for October 28 to pass before evaluating flood-prone areas.

A local resident estimated that 90% of the island remains habitable, but that is not a substitute for a technical decision by responsible authorities.

What residents need next

Clear, regular information is essential for families who have been evacuated. They need to know what is being assessed, when the next field visit will occur and what conditions would allow a safe return. The report said Conade was evaluating new pipes for installation.

Panama Now Online will follow official and technical updates. Until a final decision is issued, residents should rely on authorized instructions and avoid re-entering restricted areas based on rumor or informal assurances.
