PANAMA CITY, July 20, 2026 – Eight people were apprehended in an operation linked to an alleged fraud scheme involving the sale of land and properties using falsified documents from the National Land Administration Authority, known as ANATI.
The joint action by the Public Prosecutor’s Office and the National Police included searches in Panama and San Miguelito. Investigators say the case began in March 2025 after complaints connected to the alleged scheme.
Authorities estimate the economic loss to victims at approximately B/.177,685. According to the reported investigation, the group allegedly used social media to advertise land and properties with supposed possession rights, then relied on falsified ANATI documents to make the transactions appear legitimate.
Real-estate fraud is particularly damaging because victims may spend savings or take loans believing they are buying secure rights. The case also shows how official-looking documents and social media listings can be combined to create a convincing fraud channel.
