James Gunn, director and current co-head of DC Studios, recently addressed rumors about the possible casting of a new Wonder Woman.
Speculation arose after fans noticed that Gunn was following Adria Arjona, an actress known for her roles in Andor and Hit Man , on Instagram . She is the daughter of singer Ricardo Arjona .
This simple gesture raised alarm bells about the possibility of her being among the candidates to play the iconic superhero in the new era of the DC cinematic universe.
Asked how much fans should read into his social media interactions to decipher potential casting clues, Gunn explained the origin of the rumor in an interview with Extra .
“ I follow Adria on Instagram, but everyone thought, ‘She just followed her, so that means she’s Wonder Woman ,’” she laughed, adding, “ She would make a great Wonder Woman, by the way .”
The filmmaker clarified that his relationship with the actress is not new: “ She was in a film I made seven years ago ,” he said in reference to The Belko Experiment (2016).
He added that the two have been friends ever since and that he had been following her since then, thus disproving the theory that the following was a casting call . “ People tend to notice these things all the time ,” he noted.
Under the leadership of Gunn and Peter Safran, DC Studios is undergoing a restructuring process aimed at revamping its superhero narrative in film and television. Wonder Woman remains key to this plan, along with Superman, Batman, and Supergirl.
Ahead of Superman ‘s release , Gunn confirmed to Entertainment Weekly that a new Wonder Woman film is already in development. ” We’re working on Wonder Woman. It’s being written right now ,” he teased, making it clear that it will be a separate project from Paradise Lost , Max’s series exploring Amazon culture. ” It’s a separate thing ,” he added.
During a call with investors in May 2025, Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav emphasized that Superman, Batman, Supergirl, and Wonder Woman are key players in this new era . Gunn backed up that view: “ I think that’s true. In fact, he said that because I mentioned it myself. I wouldn’t say they’re the only important characters, but they are fundamental to us. I feel very good about two of those characters right now, and we’re working on the other two .”
So far, it has not been made official who will play the revamped Diana Prince. Gal Gadot brought the character to life in the previous era of DC Films, under the direction of Zack Snyder and Patty Jenkins, participating in titles such as Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice , both Wonder Woman installments, Justice League, as well as cameos in Shazam! Fury of the Gods and The Flash. However, with the arrival of Gunn and Safran, the project for a third film with Gadot was canceled, opening the door to a new version to relaunch the franchise.
Gunn also teased the arrival of another iconic Amazon: Nubia. Speaking with Pay or Wait, he confirmed that her live-action debut is in the works. “ Yeah, we’re talking about it a lot. I want to see all kinds of people represented in the DCU. And there might be a surprise in the not-too-distant future ,” he said.
Nubia, who debuted in the comics in 1973, is known as Diana’s sister and, in more recent versions, as the first Wonder Woman and queen of the Amazons following the death of Hippolyta. Her story could fit into Paradise Lost , described by Gunn as a political thriller set on Themyscira, the Amazons’ home island, in a time before Diana’s birth .
