The president of Costa Rica, Carlos Alvarado, affirmed this Monday that Nicaragua no longer presents “any trace of democracy”, during a visit to Spain before leaving power in May.

“What is happening in Nicaragua is very unfortunate, as the democratic institutions have progressively been eroded, destroyed; it no longer has any trace of democracy,” said the Costa Rican president during an event in the Spanish capital.

“We have all the opposition that was imprisoned before the elections in November last year, elections that were not transparent,” said Alvarado, referring to the internationally questioned elections that gave Daniel Ortega his fourth consecutive term.

Alvarado’s words come a few days after the defection of the Nicaraguan ambassador to the Organization of American States (OAS), Arturo McFields, who called the Ortega government a “dictatorship,” and the resignation on Sunday of one of the Nicaraguan lawyers before the International Court of Justice (ICJ), the American Paul Reichler, who said he was doing it “out of moral conscience.”

The Costa Rican president called on the international community to work to promote “a process of dialogue and clean and transparent elections” in Nicaragua, “always with the leadership of the Nicaraguans themselves.”

On the other hand, Alvarado asked his successor, who will be elected in the ballot this Sunday between the conservative Rodrigo Chaves and the liberal José María Figueres, to preserve the macroeconomic stability of the country, since, according to him, “we are returning the house in order”. He also urged him to maintain progress in environmental and social matters, such as equal marriage or therapeutic abortion.

“I hope that all that legacy will not go back because it is based on science,” Alvarado said.

During his visit to Spain, Alvarado will be received this Monday by King Felipe VI and by the Prime Minister, the socialist Pedro Sánchez, and will hold meetings with companies to promote investment in his country.

His trip to Europe, possibly the last international before leaving power on May 8, also includes a stopover in France.
