Heavy Rain Damages Homes in Bocas del Toro as Sixaola River Peaks
CHANGUINOLA, August 17, 2026 – During the early hours of Sunday, the National Civil Protection System said it was keeping response personnel active for monitoring and assessment work after heavy rain recorded in different sectors of Bocas del Toro province, Metro Libre reported.
According to Sinaproc, the first reports described damage to several homes in the Finca 4 corregimiento, specifically in the Pantanal 2 community.
Damage was also reported in sectors of the Finca 51 corregimiento, in the Debora community, and in the Barranco corregimiento.
Sinaproc said it is continuing patrols and surveillance in areas considered vulnerable, to identify new damage and provide a timely response to communities that may be affected.
The agency is paying particular attention to the Sixaola river, which is running turbid and at a maximum level, a situation that represents a risk to anyone near its channel or other watercourses in the area.
Sinaproc recommended that residents follow the instructions of authorities on site and avoid crossing rivers, streams or other bodies of water that are running high.
The institution repeated its call for the public to act with caution and stay informed through official channels while monitoring and assessment work continues.

Why it matters
The Sixaola marks the Costa Rica border and floods fast, so communities along it have little warning when it peaks.
What happens next
Sinaproc continues assessment patrols in the affected corregimientos.
