Low River levels call for H20 moderation.

Due to the prolongation of the dry season that occurs in the country, the flow of most rivers has decreased, therefore, the Institute of Aqueducts and Sewage Systems (Idaan) asks the population to “reduce the consumption” of water potable.

Due to the drought, production of drinking water decreases in Pacora water treatment plant
Iván Cano, Director of Operations of Idaan, recalled that the decrease in river levels affects the production of potable water in all the water treatment plants managed by the entity.

According to the Idaan, the critical point is registered in Panama East, since the Cabra 1 and 2 water treatment plants keep working at 40% of their production.

This situation is due to the low flow in the intake of raw water, which has caused sectors such as El Trebol, Santa Rita, Los Jardines and Nueva Esperanza, among others, do not have potable water.

To supply these sectors, a reinforced sectorization has been carried out with 18 tank cars that distribute water to the residents who are supplied with both the Cabra 1 and 2 water treatment plant and the Centenario water treatment plant.

Cano said that if the behavior of the dry season and rivers are maintained in the coming weeks, water treatment plants in the interior of the country will have to lower production .

“It is the consumers who can determine the behavior of the drinking water network. Actions of rational use of water will help maintain a better supply, “said Cano.

Given the likelihood that the El Niño phenomenon will spread, the Idaan will take the following measures: Damming rivers, drilling wells, enabling tank cars, distribution sectorization, valve operations, and injection into the grid and reservoir tanks through tank cars.

The Idaan recalled that “we are facing an El Niño phenomenon that does not give a truce and is expected to be stronger than in previous years.”

Meanwhile, in the Azuero peninsula (Herrera and Los Santos provinces) the water treatment plants are still operational due to the construction of fuse dams, however, the level of the rivers continues to decrease considerably.
