Public ministry hosts libel lawsuit against Navarro in Odebrecht case

Legal

Jaime Lasso Del Castillo, member of the Panameñista Party and who acknowledged having collected funds from the construction company Odebrecht for the group between 2010 and 2014, sued for slander and insult to the presidential candidate Juan Carlos Navarro, of the Democratic Revolutionary Party, for having affirmed in National Television that ‘washed silver’.

In the complaint to which La Estrella de Panamá had access , and which has been admitted by the Public Ministry, the events that affected Lasso are narrated.

According to the document, on January 30 of this year, in an interview conducted by the journalist Icard Reyes on the aforementioned television station, Navarro said that the Don James Foundation (of which Lasso is a founder) “laundered money”. A reckless, slanderous and insulting assertion since no one is guilty until proven and sanctioned by a final judgment, “the complaint states.

Lasso adds that this assertion was based on speculation without any evidence, a situation that can be clearly misrepresented, since there is no final conviction against him.
