All signs point to SUNTRAC strike to go as planned

Infrastructure

The Chamber of Commerce, Industries and Agriculture of Panama (Cciap) expressed its concern about the strike announcements of the Single Union of Construction Workers and Similar Workers (Suntracs) and civic organizations of the province of Colon, and warn of the adverse impact of said measures in the economic performance of the country.

For this business association, it is a reality that the economy does not resist a drastic adjustment that would provoke a scaled increase in real estate, which is no longer accessible to a large part of the population that does not meet the requirements of bank credit as a product of various factors, including an increase in unemployment.

Suntracs, which negotiates a collective agreement with the Panamanian Chamber of Construction (Capac), called for a strike on Wednesday, April 18, and demands a salary increase of 60% for the four-year duration of the convention.

‘The strike is a fundamental guarantee for the workers, but its exercise can not harm the rights of other citizens. That is why the Chamber insists that the policies and decisions in this matter must consider the maintenance of the current jobs and the creation of all the many more that our development will demand, “says the CCIAP.
