An authentic natural spectacle occurs in Isla Cañas, district of Tonosí, when hundreds of turtles, of about four species, arrive to spawn.

And this season of the year dozens of tourists move, by water, to this community to observe the turtle parade, which this season nest. Hawksbill, bighead, green, leatherback or canal turtles arrive in the area.

Edgard Samaniego, volunteer, guide and who has been in this turtle conservation project for about 20 years, said that this phenomenon, which is known as arribada, is always linked to the waning nights.

After leaving their eggs in the sand, they return to the sea, Samaniego added, indicating that the turtles leave mostly at high tide.

Samaniego explained that this is the fourth arrival of the year, since they occur from August to December.

Each spawning can generate between 80 to 100 eggs, he said.

The villager explained that, in addition to being a project for the conservation of the species, it helps the inhabitants to be tourist guides, obtaining an income and sustenance for their homes.

It should be noted that the entire community is involved in this project since tourists are offered packages that include the round trip boat, accommodation on the island, breakfast, lunch and dinner, a tour with a local guide, as well as The observation of sea turtles on the beach.
