Lack of order in Venezuela draws attention to OAS

International Relations

The assembly of the Organization of American States (OAS) , the main political forum on the continent, approved a resolution promoted by the United States on Tuesday that opens the door to an eventual suspension of Venezuela from the organization due to the breakdown of the democratic order.

OAS resolution on the situation in Venezuela
The initiative, adopted by 19 votes in favor, four against and 11 abstentions, declares illegitimate the re-election of Nicolás Maduro and calls to apply the mechanisms of the Inter-American Democratic Charter for “alteration of the constitutional order”, a process that could lead to the suspension of Venezuela from the OAS.

The document also states that Maduro’s victory lacks legitimacy, a position that had already been adopted separately by at least 15 nations of the hemisphere.

The text, promoted by the United States, was presented by Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Mexico and Peru, with the co-sponsorship of Costa Rica, Guatemala and Paraguay.
