Challenging the cold and rain that threatened at times, the bony Catrinas, a character that evokes a skeleton and is part of the Mexican Day of the Dead celebrations , paraded this weekend through the streets of Mexico City to delight dozens of Thousands of spectators
People watched the parade of ‘calacas’ excitedly, as skeletons are popularly called.

The Mega Procession of Catrinas marks the beginning of the celebrations of the dead, one of the most entrenched traditions in Mexico.
Attendees also got smart, wearing the classic black outfit and witty costumes. And for a payment of between 5 dollars, skilled makeup artists left their faces in their bones and adorned with flowers or ingenious figures.
The “Catrina”, one of the most emblematic figures of local culture, was created in 1910, in the middle of the Mexican Revolution, by the renowned Mexican cartoonist José Guadalupe Posada as an expression of social criticism of the natives who were economically enriched, hung elegant jewels and clothes and belittled their origins.
The altar of the dead or offering is a fundamental part of the celebration of the dead in Mexican homes and evokes the pre-Hispanic belief that loved ones who have already died will return on the days of the Dead, November 1 and 2, to live with the living .
This was the first of three parades scheduled in the Mexican capital to commemorate the tradition.
