In January 2024, 806 murders were recorded, according to the UN
Violence in the capital of Haiti reached “extreme levels,” according to a mortality survey by the humanitarian organization Doctors Without Borders (MSF) with data prior to the worsening of the situation currently experienced in the metropolitan area of Port-au-Prince.
This retrospective study of mortality in the capital’s Cité Soleil neighborhood, covering the period between August 2022 and last July, reveals a “worrying escalation of violence” compared to a similar work from 2007 by MSF in the same area.
According to the investigation, almost 41% of the deaths were linked to violence in that neighborhood, with a crude mortality rate of 0.63 deaths per 10,000 people per day.
These levels are similar to those recorded in 2017 in the fields of Raqqa, in Syria, among a population exposed to the bombings of the international coalition against the Islamic State group and its terror, as well as among the Rohingya community in Myanmar during the months immediately preceding the campaign of violence against them by the Burmese Army.
According to the study, carried out by Epicenter (MSF’s epidemiology and medical research branch), 13% of Cité Soleil residents interviewed declared having witnessed acts of extreme violence, such as murders or lynchings in the street, and 40% of The women stated that they refused prenatal care due to insecurity.
The number of violent deaths counted in the survey exceeded 2,300 in Cité Soleil.
