CSS Plans Robotic Telesurgery Expansion Starting in Chiriqui
PANAMA CITY, August 11, 2026 – Panama Social Security Fund is preparing to expand robotic telesurgery beyond the capital, with Chiriqui identified as the first province in the next phase of the program, according to Telemetro.
The CSS is training multidisciplinary teams that will take part in high-complexity procedures in different regions. The goal is to reduce the need for patients to travel to Panama City for specialized interventions.
Telemetro reported that the initial expansion will focus on oncology care, while the program is also expected to include general surgery procedures such as gallbladder and hernia operations.
CSS health services director Marcos Young said the institution has a platform approved internationally for this kind of procedure and described the first robotic telesurgery as a milestone for public health.
The model also opens the door for specialists at Ciudad de la Salud to support complex procedures remotely once regional teams have consolidated training and experience.
Herrera is also being prepared for the program, with the Dr. Gustavo Nelson Collado Hospital named as a future site once required supplies and readiness steps are completed.
