At the opening ceremony of the “XLVII Meeting of Representatives and Working Groups of the Latin American Financial Action Group (Gafilat)” President Laurentino Cortizo reaffirmed Panama’s commitment to combat money laundering.

Cortizo also reiterated Panama’s commitment to facilitate cooperation actions for international financial and fiscal transparency.

The president welcomed the delegations of the 18 countries that make up Gafilat and the representatives of cooperating countries and international organizations.

“Panama has established national policies to help prevent and combat money laundering and the financing of terrorism and the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction,” he said.

Likewise, the president said that the cooperation mechanisms between the member countries of Gafilat have been strengthened.

In order to achieve more effective and efficient national and regional systems, the president highlighted, “integrity, transparency, leadership, cooperation, inclusion and technical professional training are key.”

Cortizo recognized that Gafilat’s support has been and is essential for the proper implementation of the FATF standards and the strengthening of financial services in all member countries.

He added that this strengthening is to “reinforce international transparency and promote technical support for the protection of the socioeconomic integrity of our countries.”
