Repeal of RODMAN Law a step in right direction

by James “JB” Bryson

This story that appeared today and I have further linked online may seem like an afterthought or something to just fill the political quota of the news day, but in terms of the possible impact it can have on future business with Americans and avoiding the pay to play actions of the past that have cost my Americans dearly, in theory can be a good thing.

The Port of Rodman Law being repealed is a de-facto admission that the way contracts were passed around and government funds used to line the pockets of officials and developers alike are at the forefront of many of the cases you see being arisen against former officials that held posts within the ministry.

It is my hope, that he same greater attention shown to these massive projects like the “Port of Rodman”, will now trickle down to the may instances of developer fraud that has permeated the recent growth spurt in Panama. In particular, the sale of condos and land to incoming expats looking to settle in Panama.

In the same manner in which the Government will annex and claim land to be their own for the purpose of personal gain, it is done all the time with Rights of Possession properties and ambiguity over true ownership of land being called into question all the time. Oftentimes with expats being left to hold the bag and being forced to fight in an extremely cloudy if not corrupt court system.

I enjoy this article as Varela himself was present at the groundbreaking of this port back in 2015. Let’s see what happens now as the infrastructure of Panama is bursting at the seams and is in dire need of these types of projects being completed, yet done so above bard and in the interest of all the residents of Panama.

Thanks

“JB”
