Ecuador will allocate 13.5 million dollars recovered from the corruption plot of Brazil’s Odebrecht to the payment of a multibillion-dollar debt with social security retirees, President Lenin Moreno said Wednesday .

“I have decided that all money returned be used to cover the unjust debt of one thousand 200 million (dollars), which the previous government left us with the retirees of the country,” Moreno said in a national network.

The 13.5 million dollars that will be returned by the Ecuadorian businessman Tomislav Topic will serve to pay 270 people who, according to Moreno, have waited for 10 years for their retirement money.

“I know that nothing cures the pain that has caused the mistreatment of not giving them what belongs to them, but at least we are remedying in something that outrage with this decision to inject more funds to pay that inherited debt,” the president added. , who sustains a power struggle with his exalted and predecessor Rafael Correa (2007-2017).

Last Monday the government announced that Glory International Industry , domiciled in Hong Kong, transferred Odebrecht funds to a US account of Topic for a fiber optic submarine cable project.

In a letter released by the executive, Topic notes that his company Telconet “has received money”, of which, he assures, “only now” finds out that “they may have illicit origin”. Therefore, “we commit ourselves, as proof of our good faith, to consign those values” to the State, he adds. Two years ago the businessman returned 2.5 million dollars as part of another investigation into the corruption of Odebrecht in Ecuador.

Ricardo Rivera, an uncle of former Vice President Jorge Glas , who was in charge of the strategic sectors during the Correa administration, is involved in this new case. Rivera and Glas are in prison since 2017 and were sentenced in the first instance to six years for receiving 13.5 million dollars in Odebrecht bribes.
