Chiquita Panama will close two banana farms in Bocas del Toro after a prolonged strike.

A commission of ministers traveled to the city of Changuinola on Monday morning, May 12, to speak with workers who are on strike and blocking access roads to the province of Bocas del Toro.

This was confirmed to La Estrella de Panamá by the State Information Directorate, which also indicated that the director of the Social Security Fund, Dino Mon, traveled with the commission.

Participating in the executive committee are the Ministers of Labor, Jackeline Muñoz, and Trade and Industry, Julio Moltó.

For three consecutive weeks, workers at Chiquita Brands have been on strike on banana farms.

Therefore, Chiquita Panama announced on May 12 the definitive suspension of production on an entire farm and additional areas equivalent to two farms, as a result of the impacts caused by the strike.

Banana workers are holding a strike demanding the repeal of Law No. 462, which reforms the Social Security Fund.

Furthermore, the main land access routes to the province of Bocas del Toro remain blocked. This situation has even forced residents to transfer buses, and there are problems with food supplies.
