Customs Seizes 1.19 Million Suspected Contraband Cigarettes in Guabalá
CHIRIQUI, August 9, 2026 – Customs officers seized approximately 1,190,000 units of suspected contraband cigarettes at the Guabalá Integrated Control Post, Telemetro reported.
The cigarettes were allegedly hidden among other cargo in a truck traveling from the capital. During the inspection, the driver presented invoices for medical supplies, flowers and hygiene products, but inspectors found boxes containing the illicit cigarettes among the declared goods.
Authorities estimated the CIF value of the seizure at B/.89,250.00. The driver, identified as Panamanian, remains under investigation for alleged involvement in contraband.
Customs officials are continuing inquiries into the origin and final destination of the merchandise, according to the source report.
The case illustrates how contraband networks may use ordinary cargo documentation and mixed shipments to move products through checkpoints. Cigarette contraband also affects tax collection and creates unfair competition for legal importers and retailers.
For enforcement agencies, the key challenge is tracing the supply chain beyond the vehicle stop: who organized the load, where the products entered the market and who was supposed to receive them.
