The Psammogorgia pax is a new species of coral discovered 63 meters deep on the Hannibal Bank, an underwater mountain in Coiba National Park.

It is a white, fan-shaped coral and its colony is composed of microscopic structures of calcium carbonate, according to a statement from the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute (Stri) .

Pax means “peace” in Latin, “a name that alludes to the need to make peace with nature and end the devastation of the oceans,” said the scientists of Stri, the Center for Research in Marine Sciences and Limnology of the University of Costa Rica and other institutions that participated in the finding.
