The Republican representative of Florida, Mario Díaz-Balart , one of the authors of the legislation, said in a press release that the measure “supports the people of Nicaragua in their demand for a rule of law, human rights, free and fair elections by denying resources to their oppressors. ”

Trump signed the bill a day after Nicaragua announced the expulsion of international experts who investigate allegations of human rights violations during street protests calling on Daniel Ortega to step down as president.

The protests left at least 230 people dead.
