Woman elected to lead Maritime Chamber of Commerce signifies progressive change

Patricia Velásquez was elected last Friday as president of the Maritime Chamber of Panama for the period 2018-2019 to replace Julio De La Lastra .

It is the first time that a woman has been elected to lead the guild founded in 1979, and in which there are more than 200 affiliated maritime companies.

Velásquez obtained 104 votes or 55% of those who participated in the vote, while Flor Torrijos, the other candidate for the presidency, won 84 votes, which is the same as 45%.

The eight directors who will accompany Velásquez on the board were also chosen: Daniel Isaza Valdés, Verónica Valenzuela, Rodolfo Sabonge, Mary Carmen Barrios, María Lourdes Galán, Francis X. Zeimetz, Nicolás Vukelja and Wendy Sagel.

Voting among members was electronically last Thursday and Friday.

The Maritime Chamber of Panama is the main guild of the sector, and is part of the transport and communications area, which together contributes more than 20% to the gross domestic product of the country.
