Michael Cohen, who as a personal lawyer to President Donald Trump once promised to “accept a bullet” for his boss, was sentenced on Wednesday to three years in prison for a series of crimes that included arranging secret payments to two women, according to him, for Trump orders.

The ruling coincided with what federal prosecutors requested.

Cohen, standing alone at the defense table, shook his head slightly and closed his eyes briefly when the judge announced the sentence.

District Judge William H. Pauley III said the lawyer deserved a modest credit for admitting guilt and cooperating in a federal investigation into Russia’s efforts to influence the presidential election.

Before announcing the ruling, Cohen said he took full responsibility for his actions.

“Blind loyalty … led me to the dark path instead of the path of light,” said the ex-lawyer.

Cohen entered the courtroom without talking to the reporters.

The prosecutor has pleaded guilty to misleading Congress over his efforts to build a Trump tower in Moscow, refraining from revealing that he had dealings with Russian officials on the issue even well into the presidential campaign.

Also, in August, Cohen pleaded guilty to violating campaign finance rules by arranging payments to Playboy ex-model Karen McDougal and porn actress Stormy Daniels not to reveal they had extramarital affairs with Trump.

Michael Avenatti, Daniels’ lawyer, was present at the court.
