US President Donald Trump announced Thursday in a letter to North Korean leader Kim Jong Un that the summit scheduled for June 12 in Singapore was canceled due to the “open hostility” shown by Pyongyang.

“Unfortunately, based on the enormous anger and open hostility shown in his recent statements, I feel it is inappropriate at this time to have such a long-planned meeting,” Trump said in the document, released by the White House.

Therefore, the US president added, “for the good of both countries but to the detriment of the whole world, (the meeting) will not take place.”

According to Trump, the world in general and North Korea in particular “have missed a great opportunity” to build a lasting peace. “This missed opportunity is a sad moment in history,” he said.
