The Ministry of Environment (MiAmbiente) announced the start of a comprehensive audit of the Panama Copper Mine project , which will verify compliance with all environmental, social, legal and tax commitments established in the Category III Environmental Impact Study (EIS) .
The audit will incorporate the results of a public consultation conducted between January and February 2025, with the participation of more than 260 organizations, local communities, businesses, and citizens, strengthening the transparency of the process and the protection of natural resources.
Juan Miguel Jaén, head of MiAmbiente’s Environmental Quality Control and Verification Department, explained that the EIA includes more than 370 environmental commitments , which will be verified during all phases of the project, from construction to operation.
SGS Panama Control Services, Inc. , the company in charge of the audit, will evaluate critical areas such as waste management, water and air quality, greenhouse gas emissions, tailings safety, biodiversity, reforestation, community relations, and compliance with legal and tax regulations.
In addition, previous construction and operation reports will be reviewed to verify the project’s historical compliance.
According to the ministry, citizens will be able to consult the audit documents on its website www.miambiente.gob.pa , following the transparency guidelines of Law 6 of 2002 and Law 125 of 2020, which implements the Escazú Agreement .
