Brad Pitt’s Rep Speaks Out After Police Arrest Imposters for Allegedly Posing as Actor, Scamming Over $350K from Women

“It’s awful that scammers take advantage of fans’ strong connection with celebrities,” said Brad Pitt’s rep

Brad Pitt‘s rep is speaking out after scammers were arrested for allegedly pretending to be the actor in order to take money from women on social media.

A rep for the Oscar winner, 60, who does not have any official social media accounts, tells PEOPLE in a statement Sept. 25, “It’s awful that scammers take advantage of fans’ strong connection with celebrities, and this is an important reminder to not respond to unsolicited online outreach, especially from actors who have no social media presence.”

Spain’s Ministry of the Interior said in a Sept. 23 statement that five people were arrested and more are under investigation in connection to a “criminal organization” that allegedly defrauded over $350,000 from two women online.

The scammers, authorities said, posed as a “fake Brad Pitt” to target his fans.

In the press release, translated to English, authorities said the scammers messaged the victims as if they were Pitt, promising them a romantic relationship in the future. After building trust, the alleged scammers asked the women to transfer money to invest in various projects with him.

Three suspects were arrested in November and two more were arrested in July. Their charges include fraud, money laundering and forgery.

Several celebrities have spoken out to warn fans of fraudulent accounts claiming to be them while attempting to solicit and scam on social media, including Whoopi GoldbergTom HanksJohnny Depp .

In August, Florence Pugh shared a statement on her Instagram Stories saying, “Just wanted to remind everyone that I don’t have any other account other than this one. No private pages or private chats or private messaging accounts.. just this one.”

“Been brought to my attention that some people have been asked for money/pictures/communication through pages pretending to me,” the actress, 28, added at the time.

“I’m firstly sorry that this is a weird hobby that some people like doing, and I’m also sorry that you were [led] to believe that those spaces were save. Please unfollow and reports.

So the wife and I get a call from my son-in-law yesterday when we were sitting on the veranda, and we were told about this happening on an absolutely ridiculous scale. We saw some pics and almost came apart at the seams. I have never, ever, ever (with the exception of Cecilio Miller waving a knife at cops on Red Frog Beach) wanted to POST something more.  I very rarely ever get something this AUDACIOUS to yap about, and I would like nothing more than to BLAST all of these persons names over the INTERNET and watch it trend more than my “SPOCK” ROMELO ROUX post a few years back.

But the CHERRY on the CAKE is WHERE it occurred and WHO it PISSED OFF!!!!

A few of my “peeps” can easily determine who I’m referring to so please just smile and chuckle amongst yourselves.

The wife, (not always the funniest), actually had 2 Cosmopolitans while I had my Bourbon, and made me laugh. Steve compared them to drawing LeBRON JAMES name out of a hat for a Basketball game. And she mumbled out “Yeah, but LeBRON won’t follow you home, destroy your credit, and find out your having an affair”. LMFAO—– I had to give her credit on that one.  I hope I can show these PHOTOS and NAMES, as this story will have LEGS.   “TMZ”…….here comes “PNO”.

NOT A SLAP ON WRIST IF MONEY IS LOST>>>

Impersonating a celebrity in the United States, while not always a felony, can lead to various legal consequences depending on the jurisdiction and the specific actions taken. While many jurisdictions have laws against online impersonation, the act itself is not always considered a felony. However, if the impersonation leads to financial fraud, identity theft, or other serious crimes, it could result in felony charges.

Consequences of Celebrity Impersonation:
  • Civil Lawsuits:
Celebrities can sue individuals who impersonate them for damages related to defamation, false endorsement, or violation of their right of publicity.

  • Criminal Charges:
Depending on the jurisdiction and the nature of the impersonation, criminal charges such as fraud, identity theft, or violation of computer crime laws could be filed.

  • Social Media Bans:
Social media platforms have policies against impersonation and can ban users who violate these policies.

  • Public Relations Damage:
Impersonating a celebrity can damage the individual’s reputation and lead to negative publicity.

  • Financial Losses:
If the impersonation involves financial scams, victims may suffer significant financial losses.

Examples:
  • California:
Has both civil and criminal laws against online impersonation, with potential penalties including fines and imprisonment.
  • Federal Law:
The Lanham Act can be used to combat unauthorized commercial use of a celebrity’s name in connection with goods and services.

Important Considerations:
  • Intent: The intent behind the impersonation is crucial. If it’s done for malicious purposes, such as financial gain or to cause harm, it is more likely to result in serious legal consequences.
  • Jurisdiction: Laws regarding online impersonation vary by state and jurisdiction.
  • Public vs. Private Figure: The status of the celebrity (public figure vs. private individual) can affect the legal consequences.
Reporting:

INTERNATIONALLY-

Worldwide, identity theft is not always specifically and comprehensively defined as a distinct crime in the Federal Criminal CodeHowever, various related offenses and actions are addressed under different laws, particularly those concerning financial transactions and computer crimes. While the term “identity theft” isn’t explicitly used, the actions associated with it are covered under laws related to financial fraud, computer crimes, and the misuse of personal information.

Specific Laws and Actions:
  • Financial Crimes:
The Credit Institutions Law addresses the production, alteration, or use of credit cards or other payment instruments without authorization, carrying penalties of imprisonment and fines.

  • Computer Crimes:
Actions involving the unauthorized access, use, or transmission of personal information in digital environments are covered under laws related to computer crimes.

  • Fraud:
Using someone’s identity to commit fraud, including financial fraud, is addressed under laws related to fraud and deception.

  • Misuse of Personal Information:
Laws related to privacy and data protection address the misuse of personal information, including its unauthorized collection, use, or disclosure.

Key Points:
  • Indirect Coverage:
Actions associated with identity theft are addressed through laws related to financial fraud, computer crimes, and misuse of personal information.

  • Financial Sector Focus:
Many of the provisions related to identity theft are focused on the financial sector, particularly credit institutions, due to the high incidence of fraud and theft in this area.

  • Importance of Reporting:
Victims of identity theft should report the crime to law enforcement and gather documentation to support their case.

  • Ongoing Efforts:
There are ongoing efforts to strengthen regulations and laws to better address identity theft, particularly in the financial sector.___________________________________________________________________________________
