Twenty Panamanian Students Head to China on University Scholarships
PANAMA CITY, July 31, 2026 – Twenty young Panamanians are preparing to travel to different cities in China to pursue university studies through a scholarship and academic cooperation program between the two countries.
TVN Noticias reported that the scholarship ceremony was held at the residence of Chinese Ambassador Zhang Xiangchen. The program sends beneficiaries to Chinese universities in fields expected to support Panama professional and economic development once students complete their training.
The announcement is part of a broader education exchange relationship. According to TVN, China has supported training opportunities for thousands of Panamanian academics and officials since diplomatic relations were established, and hundreds of Panamanian students have been selected for study in China.
For students, the scholarships represent more than travel. They create access to language, research networks, technical training and professional contacts that can shape careers long after graduation.
For Panama, overseas training programs are most valuable when returning graduates can connect their skills to national needs. That means attention will eventually turn to whether scholarship recipients find pathways into public service, private industry, research, logistics, technology and diplomacy.
The cohort includes students assigned to different cities and disciplines. One beneficiary cited by TVN, Carlos Espinosa from Chiriqui, will study International Relations in Beijing.
