The defense had requested a transfer to another penitentiary

This Friday it was learned that federal judge Raymond J. Dearie authorized the transfer of Ricardo Alberto and Luis Enrique Martinelli, sons of former President Ricardo Martinelli, to a low-security prison in Pennsylvania.

Both brothers are currently being held at the Metropolitan Detention Center (MDC), Brooklyn.

On May 20, the Martinellis were sentenced by the New York Court to 3 years in prison and 2 years of supervised release for participating in a bribery and money laundering scheme linked to the Brazilian construction company Odebrecht.

They only have about 13 months left to spend in prison, since the judge is going to compute as sentence time the time that both have been imprisoned since their arrest in Guatemala and their subsequent extradition to the United States.

It should be noted that the request for transfer to another prison was from the defense attorneys of the Martinelli brothers, for now the date on which this transfer could take place to the low-security prison in Allenwood, Pennsylvania is unknown.
