PANAMA CITY, August 1, 2026 – Panama auto insurance segment reported a 70 percent claims ratio during the first half of the year, a level that industry representatives say is putting pressure on policy costs.

TVN Noticias reported figures from the Panamanian Association of Insurers showing $183.7 million in written auto premiums and $128.5 million paid in claims. The association said auto claims rose 14.6 percent between January and June.

The numbers help explain why policyholders may face discussions about future rate adjustments. When a larger share of premiums is used to cover claims, insurers say the financial result of the segment deteriorates.

Health insurance is also under pressure. TVN reported $295.8 million in health premiums and $192.6 million in claims, equivalent to a 65.1 percent claims ratio.

Industry leaders said any possible adjustments would depend on the specific product, because coverage can vary by deductibles, copayments, international benefits and frequency of use.

For drivers, the story is practical: accident frequency, repair costs and claim behavior can eventually affect premiums, coverage options and the price of keeping a vehicle insured.

Why it matters

Insurance costs affect household budgets, business fleets and the affordability of risk protection for drivers and patients.

What happens next

Policyholders should watch renewal notices and compare coverage details carefully as insurers evaluate first-half claim trends.
