The presidential candidate for the Popular Party, Martín Torrijos, condemned the violence that has been recorded in the protests against the law contract between the State and Minera Panamá, which has claimed the lives of two people.

“It is regrettable that we are witnessing confrontations between Panamanians and Panamanians under the indolent and irresponsible gaze of the authorities,” said Torrijos.

The presidential candidate also called on the authorities to guarantee order and security of citizens, and on the protesters to continue their protest peacefully.

“We need to return to calm, students to their classrooms, producers must be able to see their efforts rewarded, the sick receive medical attention, and citizens can move around without problems,” said Torrijos.

Torrijos also reaffirmed his commitment to the closure of the Minera Panamá mine, regardless of the decision made by the Supreme Court of Justice.

“The citizens have already spoken and said NO to mining,” said Torrijos. “I have no conflict of interest with the mining company, that is why I assure you that whatever the decision of the Supreme Court of Justice, in my Government the mine will be closed, and there will be no more open pit metal mining in Panama,” said Torrijos.

Torrijos also called on Panamanians to preserve democracy and peaceful coexistence.

“Let us preserve our democracy and peaceful coexistence among ourselves,” Torrijos said.
