Emergency Medical Technicians Protest for Professional Reclassification
PANAMA CITY, July 20, 2026 – Emergency medical technicians and licensed emergency-care workers held a protest on Monday to demand that authorities recognize their professional reclassification and address resource shortages affecting prehospital response.
The Association of Technicians and Licensed Workers in Medical Emergencies said personnel assigned to the Social Security Fund, SUME 911 and the Fire Department want the transition from technician to licensed professional to be reflected in salary scales and institutional recognition. The demonstration took place near the Dr. Arnulfo Arias Madrid Hospital Complex.
The workers said their claims are not limited to pay. They also pointed to shortages of supplies, equipment and ambulances, warning that those gaps can slow emergency response even though the system operates around the clock. The association said protests were also taking place in provinces including Panama Oeste and Veraguas.
The labor pressure lands at a sensitive moment for Panama health services. Emergency response depends on trained teams, vehicles, communications and hospital coordination; when one part fails, patients can feel the delay before reaching a doctor.
