The government of Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega is in a “terminal crisis”, without direction and with the economy collapsed after eight months of protests, while leading the repression against human rights organizations and the media, he said in an interview with the AFP Carlos Fernando Chamorro, journalist critical of the president.

“We are in a terminal crisis” because Ortega has taken the country “to a cliff (…) destroying the economy and coexistence, and can only be maintained by terror,” Chamorro explained.

Ortega has ruled out anticipating elections and resuming dialogue with the opposition, suspended six months ago. “Everything is being played and it is sinking the country, it is not a statesman, it is not reasoning,” he added.

However, Chamorro, son of the former president Violeta Barrios de Chamorro , considered that the end of Ortega’s government, which he describes as a dictatorship, has two ways: that he agrees to resign or that, as a result of the economic collapse, an exit occurs forced. ”

Chamorro suffered in the last week repressive actions of the police, who raided their offices and confiscated equipment from the digital newspaper, Confidential , and the television programs This Week and This Night, which are their property, which led to the condemnation of organizations of journalists and international human rights.

“This regime I do not see sustainable in 2019, we are moving to a total collapse of the economy,” said the communicator. Specialists have warned that if there is no solution to the crisis, the economic contraction will go from 4% to 11%.

After eight months of protests that keep the country in suspense, Ortega, 73 years old and 11 in power, “no longer governs, he commands, he orders, but has no capacity to reach consensus (…) There will be a moment that is going to produce a negotiation, with or without Ortega, “he added.
