The National Government has assigned a starting transfer for $3,394,687 million to finish the Nuevo Cartí urbanization project, which aims to accommodate 300 families who currently live in danger of flooding and overcrowding on the Gardí Sugdub island, in Guna Yala.
With the transfer of departure, the authorities seek to pay some commitments with the company Ingeniería HOS, SA that builds this neighborhood of social interest, which is currently 78.46% complete, with a possible delivery date of mid-2023. To date, government investment has been $12.2 million.
“This is money that we need to continue the Nuevo Cartí urbanization project, which we are building on the mainland, in the Guna Yala regional sector, where, in addition to these solutions, a school and a health center are being built,” said the minister. of Housing, Rogelio Paredes, in a statement.
Construction site
The Nuevo Cartí urbanization project includes a sanitary, aqueduct, and stormwater system, a circulation path, a water well, electricity, a sports park with a basketball court, three neighborhood parks with children’s play areas, the Congress House, La Chicha House, an area for commerce, among other amenities.
The new homes, measuring 40.96 square meters, have two bedrooms, a living-dining room, a bathroom and a laundry room, as well as five of the homes will be suitable for families with a member with a disability.
Currently, in this housing work, progress is being made in the erection of houses and structures for drinking water storage tanks.
Why the transfer?
The population of Gardí Subdug in Guna Yala will be the first human displacement in Latin America caused by climate change.
The Minister of Housing commented that since the island of the San Blas archipelago is the first to suffer this type of subsidence, “it is necessary to resume the project and finish it so that families in danger can live in peace on the mainland.”
He justified that the delays in the payments of the work have happened with other projects at the national level, due to the lack of income that the government has as a result of the pandemic and the subsidies that have been granted to the Panamanian people.
