The number of Ukrainian refugees today reached the figure of five million, with the addition of 20,000 new departures from Ukraine in the last 24 hours, according to data updated daily by the United Nations Refugee Agency (UNHCR).
Added to the Ukrainians who have fled their country due to the war are at least 7.1 million displaced within Ukraine itself, bringing the total number of people who have left their homes after the Russian invasion to more than 12 million. , more than a quarter of the national population.
Poland has received more than half of the exodus from Ukraine (2.8 million), and other countries neighboring Ukraine have also taken in large numbers of refugees, such as Romania (757,000, many of them having previously passed through Moldova), Russia (549,000) or Hungary (471,000).
Most of these refugees are women, children and the elderly, according to United Nations humanitarian agencies.
This is the largest exodus of refugees experienced by the European continent since the end of the Second World War (1939-1945)
