Despite the questioning of the deputies, the environment minister, Emilio Sempris , yesterday defended the environmental impact study (EIA) category 1 for the rehabilitation and maintenance of an airstrip in the Coiba National Park , in the province of Veraguas .

Sempris attended a summons made by the Legislature on August 30 in connection with the works in Coiba, declared a World Heritage Site by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (Unesco, for its acronym in English ).

The official also answered questions about timber extraction in Darién.

The minister stressed that an EIA category 1 was approved, because the area to be intervened is a polygon of four hectares that was impacted nine years ago.

At the same time, he indicated that the project consists of an adaptation of the runway in the main camp of the island and plans to improve a waiting room that is in terrible condition, according to the statement.

Environmental organizations, scientists and community activists have questioned this study, because category 1 is for projects with less or no impact on the area in which it will be built. Also, because the EIA was presented on June 26 before the regional management of Veraguas and was approved the next day.
