Mexico received 20.3% more international tourists in 2022 than in 2021, accompanied by an increase of more than 42% in foreign currency income for this concept, the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (Inegi) reported this Friday.More than 38.3 million foreign tourists entered the country throughout last year, compared to 31.86 million the previous year, according to the report by the autonomous body.The main annual upturn occurred in air tourists, which increased by 46.1% to exceed 21.3 million people, while in 2021 they were close to 14.6 million.Tourists entering land rose 19% to 4.09 million, although border crossings decreased by 6.6% to 12.9 million.The data reflects the recovery of tourism after the pandemic in Mexico, which received 31.86 million international tourists during 2021, 31.3% more than in 2020, in addition to an income of 18,487 million dollars.On the other hand, in 2022 the total spending of international tourists shot up 42.5% annually, going to 26,346.9 million dollars.Similarly, the average expense of each tourist grew by 18.5% to $687.42 in 2022 compared to $580.26 in 2021.Only in December, the arrival of international tourists rose by 15.7% year-on-year to 4.25 million.While the total expenditure of these tourists shot up 19.2% to 2,859.8 million dollars, and the average expenditure rose 3% to 671.77 dollars per tourist.The tourism gross domestic product (GDP) of Mexico, which before the health crisis represented 8.6% of the national economy in 2019, closed 2021 at 7.1% and in 2022 it will do so at 8.3%, according to government estimates.Even so, Mexico was the third most visited country in the world in 2020, a temporary phenomenon that is attributed to flexible sanitary measures in the tourist areas of the country.Before the pandemic, Mexico was consolidated in 2019 as one of the 10 most visited countries in the world, with more than 45 million international tourists who left 24,563 million dollars, an annual growth of 9%.
