Repeal of RODMAN Law a step in right direction

This story that appeared today and I have further linked online may seem like an afterthought or something to just fill the political quota of the news day, but in terms of the possible impact it can have on future business with Americans and avoiding the pay to play actions of the past that have cost my Americans dearly, in theory can be a good thing.

The Port of Rodman Law being repealed is a de-facto admission that the way contracts were passed around and government funds used to line the pockets of officials and developers alike are at the forefront of many of the cases you see being arisen against former officials that held posts within the ministry.

It is my hope, that he same greater attention shown to these massive projects like the “Port of Rodman”, will now trickle down to the may instances of developer fraud that has permeated the recent growth spurt in Panama. In particular, the sale of condos and land to incoming expats looking to settle in Panama.

In the same manner in which the Government will annex and claim land to be their own for the purpose of personal gain, it is done all the time with Rights of Possession properties and ambiguity over true ownership of land being called into question all the time. Oftentimes with expats being left to hold the bag and being forced to fight in an extremely cloudy if not corrupt court system.

I enjoy this article as Varela himself was present at the groundbreaking of this port back in 2015. Let’s see what happens now as the infrastructure of Panama is bursting at the seams and is in dire need of these types of projects being completed, yet done so above bard and in the interest of all the residents of Panama.

Thanks

Listen JB the fact of the matter is we being expats will always be at risk here in Panama. The interesting thing about Varela is his constant professing of eradicating corruption blah blah blah. Mark my words not only will he NOT eradicate corruption he will in my opinion be himself in hiding or rotting in a prison here in Panama assuming his party’s failure to maintain power. This guy and his cohorts continue to rape and piladge through any and all projects like this one. What I’ve come to understand is that Panama unlike what most outsiders recognize is NOT a democracy with a separation of powers. It’s a democratically elected DICTATORSHIP for 5 years. The president (Varela) controls the Supreme Court, the Public Ministry and until recently the Senate. Those that should be investigating him can’t and won’t do so. That is until the day comes when a shift or change politically occurs. Panama needs a President that will put the people first and break this culture of political pirates! Robbing, Rapeing and pillaging its people and resources! Apart from that we love the people and culture and think it’s the place to be. Love your site by the way. Keep up the good work!
Big Anthony

Anthony- If you are ever around downtown Panama City I would love to meet you for a drink somewhere.
I have had alot of people contact me about the very issues you mentioned in your last post comment. I would be interested to learn a bit more. Rounds are on me. “JB”

Man, Anthony, you could not hit the nail more on the head than you did. Varela sings claims that come hollow after his relationship with Martinelli. Greatest example of the pot calling the kettle black in recent memory. You being an expat as well Anthony, tell me where you settled in at and what your experiencing in your general neck of the woods? I super appreciate your visiting the site, and since I have family in the states that are often asking and even considering joining us here, I can;t in good conscience advise them to do so with this current situation.
Looking forward to you checking back in.

Torrijos brings up topic of “electricity” compliance as major election point.

I wonder if the operation of a “business” that has been run for 20 years without the necessary concession to sell utility services will be looked at?  Or does Bocas del Toro not exist in this regard?  https://www.laestrella.com.pa/panama/politica/torrijos-califica-como-un-desastre-el-servicio-de-energia-electrica-KF6557084   The candidate raised the urgent need to supply water to Panamanians …
