Alleged communications via WhatsApp of former President Juan Carlos Varela (2014-2019) with the Attorney General of the Nation, Kenya Porcell, and Comptroller Federico Humbert, among others, were released last Tuesday, November 5, through the site called varelaleaks.com , whose authorship is unknown.

No further details of the origin of the device are specified.

The communications, according to the site, allegedly correspond to the years 2017 and 2018, and also include alleged messages between the former president and businessmen such as Pedro Heilbron, Stanley Motta and Taher Yaffar and Guillermo Liberman, among others; former deputies like Katleen Levy, and the vice president of Venezuela, Delcy Rodríguez. Similarly, with the former ambassador of Panama in Korea and lobbyist of the Panamanian party, Jaime Lasso, with whom Varela allegedly communicates regarding an investigation by the Public Ministry for a donation from Odebrecht.

There are also excerpts from communications with María Mercedes de Corró, executive vice president of La Prensa and former ambassador of Panama in Spain, in which the former president complains about the content of some notes.

In the alleged messages exchanged between Varela and Porcell, there are references to the collaboration agreements between the Public Ministry and several State contractors investigated for money laundering.

There are also references to the extradition requested from the United States by Ricardo Alberto and Luis Enrique Martinelli Linares, children of former President Ricardo Martinelli.

Extradition was required by the Public Ministry, using the corresponding channels in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The issue of Venezuela is highlighted by the alleged communications between Varela and the president of the National Constituent Assembly of the South American country, Delcy Rodríguez, and, on the other hand, with the foreign minister of that nation, Jorge Arreaza.

In the talks, Rodriguez defends the measure taken by his country to suspend economic relations (for 90 days) with several Panamanian people and companies, allegedly linked to the Odebrecht case and corruption for money laundering. Meanwhile, Arreaza allegedly invited Varela to talk and meet with Maduro. The conversations date from 2018.

So far, there has been no reaction of the issue by Varela or his relatives. The former president is currently at a trade show in Shanghai.

I have always been a strong supporter of Humbert. I’d hate to think all his oversight of the General Assembly was smoke and mirrors and I’ve beeb hoodwinked.
Hoping to read more. “JB”

PANAMA requires “REAL” western developers to take advantage of regional positivity.

OP ED: James “JB” Bryson- I certainly have much to critique about the way things are done in my adopted home here. I still feel that despite the “boon” we see in Panama City, there lies a 3rd world underbelly we can’t seem to shake. With every “Four Seasons” or …
